Providence Books & Press Review
This three-book set brings the beautiful lands of Scotland to life. Originally written for 10–14-year olds, I found they also resonated with me.
In all three books, we follow the M’Kethe family, in the first book mainly through the eyes of the eldest son, Duncan, and in the latter two, through the eyes of the youngest Angus. The setting is 17th century Scotland amidst the Covenanters' persecution by the English.
This family and all the Covenanters had to wrestle with questions such as obedience to government, taking life, and coming to the defense of neighbors. Bond does a remarkable job of interweaving these theological questions of great importance within a fictional novel. Through all three books, the family wrestles with right and wrong, desiring to make decisions that are pleasing to God.
Children will be pulled in by the action, and they can perhaps see themselves in young Duncan and Angus’s youthful enthusiasm to defend their people by taking up arms. Yet they will also be guided by Father Sandy M’Kethe’s calm, sober, thoughtful, scripture-saturated temperament. Above all we see the Covenanters overarching desire to serve God, even to the cost of there blood being shed.
Lastly as a caution these books are about war, and persecution so death is a fairly common occurrence in all three books.
